NIH Rare Diseases:42 Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ards) is a life-threatening lung condition that prevents enough oxygen from getting to the lungs and into the blood.  people who develop ards often are very ill with another disease or have major injuries. the condition leads to a buildup of fluid in the air sacs which prevents enough oxygen from passing into the bloodstream. symptoms may include difficulty breathing, low blood pressure and organ failure, rapid breathing and shortness of breath. last updated: 5/17/2012

MalaCards: Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome, also known as acute respiratory distress syndrome, is related to tuberculosis and pneumonia. An important gene associated with Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome is IL8 (interleukin 8), and among its related pathways are Activation of C3 and C5 and Collagen biosynthesis and modifying enzymes. The drugs acetylcysteine and methylprednisolone and the compounds pge2 and alpha tocopherol have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include lung, endothelial and brain, and related mouse phenotypes are skeleton and cardiovascular system.

Disease Ontology:8 A respiratory failure that results from diffuse injury to the endothelium of the lung (as in sepsis, chest trauma, massive blood transfusion, aspiration of the gastric contents, or pneumonia) and is characterized by pulmonary edema with an abnormally high amount of protein in the edematous fluid and by difficult rapid breathing and hypoxemia.
