Summaries for Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome

About this section

Fully expand this MalaCard
NIH Rare Diseases:42 Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ards) is a life-threatening lung condition that prevents enough oxygen from getting to the lungs and into the blood.  people who develop ards often are very ill with another disease or have major injuries. the condition leads to a buildup of fluid in the air sacs which prevents enough oxygen from passing into the bloodstream. symptoms may include difficulty breathing, low blood pressure and organ failure, rapid breathing and shortness of breath. last updated: 5/17/2012

MalaCards based summary: Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome, also known as non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema, is related to sepsis and septic shock. An important gene associated with Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome is C4A (complement component 4A (Rodgers blood group)), and among its related pathways are Pertussis and Selected targets of C EBPbeta. The drugs acetylcysteine and methylprednisolone and the compounds sivelestat sodium hydrate and sivelestat have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include lung, neutrophil and endothelial, and related mouse phenotype immune system.

Disease Ontology:8 A respiratory failure that results from diffuse injury to the endothelium of the lung (as in sepsis, chest trauma, massive blood transfusion, aspiration of the gastric contents, or pneumonia) and is characterized by pulmonary edema with an abnormally high amount of protein in the edematous fluid and by difficult rapid breathing and hypoxemia.
