NIH Rare Diseases:42 Hashimoto’s syndrome is a form of chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. the inflammation results in damage to the thyroid gland and reduced thyroid function or “hypothyroidism,” meaning the gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone for the needs of the body. symptoms of hashimoto’s syndrome may include goiter, a feeling of fullness in the throat, tiredness, weight gain, cold intolerance, and a slowed heart rate. hashimoto’s syndrome is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the united states. it is more common in women than in men, and it commonly appears between age 40 and age 60. a person with hashimoto’s syndrome may not always need treatment. when it is needed, the condition is treated with synthetic thyroid hormone. last updated: 12/15/2010

MalaCards: Autoimmune Thyroiditis, also known as hashimoto thyroiditis, is related to thyroiditis and hypothyroidism. An important gene associated with Autoimmune Thyroiditis is HT (Hashimoto thyroiditis), and among its related pathways are Allograft rejection and Allograft rejection. The drugs thyroglobulin and thyroid (usp) and the compounds tyrosine and glutamate have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include thyroid gl, thyroid and t cells, and related mouse phenotypes are hematopoietic system and homeostasis/metabolism.

Disease Ontology:8 An autoimmune disease of endocrine system that involves inflammation located in thyroid gland caused by the immune system reacting against its own tissues.

Genetics Home Reference:21 Hashimoto thyroiditis is a condition that affects the function of the thyroid, which is a butterfly-shaped gland in the lower neck. The thyroid makes hormones that help regulate a wide variety of critical body functions. For example, thyroid hormones influence growth and development, body temperature, heart rate, menstrual cycles, and weight. Hashimoto thyroiditis is a form of chronic inflammation that can damage the thyroid, reducing its ability to produce hormones.
