Summaries for Bronchiolitis

About this section

CDC:3 Respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-uhl) virus, or RSV, is a respiratory virus that infects the lungs and breathing passages. Healthy people usually experience mild, cold-like symptoms and recover in a week or two. But RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults. In fact, RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia in children younger than 1 year of age in the United States. In addition, RSV is being recognized more often as a significant cause of respiratory illness in older adults.

MalaCards based summary: Bronchiolitis is related to bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia and asthma, and has symptoms including cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. An important gene associated with Bronchiolitis is IL8 (interleukin 8), and among its related pathways are Chemokine Superfamily: Human/Mouse Ligand-Receptor Interactions and Cytokine production by Th17 cells in CF. The compounds formoterol and fluticasone propionate have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include lung, skin and bone, and related mouse phenotypes are tumorigenesis and renal/urinary system.

Disease Ontology:9 A lung disease that is an inflammation of the bronchioles, the smallest air passages of the lungs. it is caused by viruses and bacteria. the disease has symptom cough, has symptom wheezing, has symptom shortness of breath, has symptom fever, has symptom nasal flaring in infants and has symptom bluish skin due to lack of oxygen.
