Summaries for Collagenous Colitis

About this section
NIH Rare Diseases:42 Collagenous colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that affects the colon. it is a form of microscopic colitis, which means that the inflammation is only visible when a biopsy is examined under a microscope; the inflammation cannot be seen or diagnosed from colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. signs and symptoms may be ongoing or intermittent and may include chronic, watery, non-bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain or cramps. the exact underlying cause is unknown but may relate to a bacteria, a virus, an autoimmune response, and/or a genetic predisposition. treatment for collagenous colitis varies depending on the symptoms and severity in each individual. in some cases, the condition resolves on its own. last updated: 6/20/2013

MalaCards based summary: Collagenous Colitis, also known as microscopic colitis, collagenous type, is related to colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. An important gene associated with Collagenous Colitis is RNASE3 (ribonuclease, RNase A family, 3), and among its related pathways are Leishmaniasis and Immune response Oncostatin M signaling via JAK Stat in human cells. The compounds thiocyanate and budesonide have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include colon, small intestine and t cells, and related mouse phenotypes are skeleton and cardiovascular system.

Disease Ontology:8 A colitis characterized by a distinctive thickening of the subepithelial collagen table.
