Summaries for Horner's Syndrome

About this section
NIH Rare Diseases:48 Horner's syndrome is a rare condition characterized by miosis (constriction of the pupil), ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid), and anhidrosis (absence of sweating of the face). it is caused by damage to the sympathetic nerves of the face. the underlying causes of horner's syndrome vary greatly and may include a tumor, stroke, or other damage to a part of the brain called the brain stem; injury to the carotid artery; and trauma to the brachial plexus. in rare cases, horner's syndrome is congenital (present from birth) and associated with a lack of pigmentation of the iris (colored part of the eye). treatment of horner's syndrome depends on the underlying cause. last updated: 1/3/2017

MalaCards based summary: Horner's Syndrome, also known as horner syndrome, is related to horner syndrome, congenital and mixed type rhabdomyosarcoma. An important gene associated with Horner's Syndrome is MYOD1 (Myogenic Differentiation 1), and among its related pathways are Sympathetic Nerve Pathway (Neuroeffector Junction) and Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation Pathways and Lineage-specific Markers. Affiliated tissues include eye, brain and testes, and related mouse phenotypes are Increased HPV16-GFP infection and Decreased viability in esophageal squamous lineage.

Genetics Home Reference:25 Horner syndrome is a disorder that affects the eye and surrounding tissues on one side of the face and results from paralysis of certain nerves. Horner syndrome can appear at any time of life; in about 5 percent of affected individuals, the disorder is present from birth (congenital).
