Summaries for Intervertebral Disc Disease

About this section
NIH Rare Diseases:45 Intervertebral disc disease (idd) is a common musculoskeletal condition that primarily affects the back. it is characterized by intervertebral disc herniation and/or sciatic pain (sciatica) and is a primary cause of low back pain, affecting about 5% of individuals. both environmental and genetic factors are thought to predispose an individual to developing the condition. treatment for idd may include physical therapy, pain medications, and sometimes surgical intervention such as discectomy or spinal fusion. last updated: 3/12/2012

MalaCards based summary: Intervertebral Disc Disease, also known as lumbar disc disease, is related to methylmalonic acidemia and rheumatoid arthritis. An important gene associated with Intervertebral Disc Disease is COL9A2 (Collagen Type IX Alpha 2), and among its related pathways are ECM proteoglycans and ECM-receptor interaction. Affiliated tissues include bone, bone marrow and spinal cord, and related mouse phenotypes are limbs/digits/tail and tumorigenesis.

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot:67 Intervertebral disc disease: A common musculo-skeletal disorder caused by degeneration of intervertebral disks of the lumbar spine. It results in low-back pain and unilateral leg pain.

OMIM:49 Lumbar disc disease is caused by degeneration of intervertebral discs of the lumbar spine. One of the most common... (603932) more...
