CDC:3 Myiasis is the infection of a fly larva (maggot) in human tissue. This occurs in tropical and subtropical areas. Myiasis is rarely acquired in the United States; people typically get the infection when they travel to tropical areas in Africa and South America. People traveling with untreated and open wounds are more at risk for getting myiasis. Fly larvae need to be surgically removed by a medical professional.

MalaCards: Myiasis, also known as infestation by fly larvae, is related to furunculous myiasis and squamous cell carcinoma. An important gene associated with Myiasis is MT-CO1 (mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I), and among its related pathways is Cardiac muscle contraction. The compounds rrna and cholic acid have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include skin, breast and bone.

Disease Ontology:8 A parasitic ectoparasitic infectious disease that is caused by parasitic dipterous fly larvae (maggots) feeding on the host's necrotic or living tissue.
