Summaries for Norwegian Scabies

About this section
NIH Rare Diseases:48 Crusted scabies (also called Norwegian scabies) is a severe form of scabies that most often occurs in people who have a weakened immune system or a neurological disease, the elderly, the disabled, or those who are mentally impaired. The condition is characterized by thick crusts of skin that contain large numbers of scabies mites and eggs. The usual features of scabies (itching and a rash) may be absent. Crusted scabies is very contagious and can spread easily both by direct skin-to-skin contacts and through contaminated items such as clothing, bedding, and furniture. It is caused by superinfestation with Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis, but why the crusted scabies develops is unknown.  People with crusted scabies should receive quick and aggressive medical treatment for their infestation to prevent outbreaks of scabies.Ivermectin is commonly used for treatment.   Last updated: 12/10/2016

MalaCards based summary: Norwegian Scabies, also known as crusted scabies, is related to scabies and leukemia. An important gene associated with Norwegian Scabies is FOXP3 (Forkhead Box P3), and among its related pathways is Th2 Differentiation Pathway. Affiliated tissues include skin, t cells and testes.

Disease Ontology:11 A scabies that involves infestation of human itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei type hominis in immunocompromised and elderly persons, which is characterized by vesicles and formation of thick crusts over the skin, accompanied by abundant mites but only slight itching.
