Disease Ontology:8 An upper respiratory tract disease involving inflammation of the throat or pharynx resulting from bacterial, viral, fungal infections or irritants like pollutants or chemical substances and smoking. the infection is often referred to as "sore throat". the symptoms include pain during swallowing, enlarged tonsils coated with a white discharge, runny nose, cough and slight fever.

An important gene associated with Pharyngitis is MATR3 (matrin 3), and among its related pathways are Drug metabolism - cytochrome P450 and Neural Crest Differentiation. The drugs guaifenesin and cefditoren and the compounds vitamin a and hydrochloric acid have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include tonsil, testes and heart, and related mouse phenotypes are normal and craniofacial.
