NIH Rare Diseases:43 A pineocytoma is a tumor of the pineal gland, a small organ in the brain that makes melatonin, a hormone which regulates sleep.  pineocytomas most often occur in adults as a solid mass, though it may appear to have fluid-filled (cystic) spaces on images of the brain.  pineocytomas are usually slow-growing and do not usually spread to other parts of the body.  treatment includes surgery to remove the pineocytoma; most of these tumors do not regrow (recur) after surgery. last updated: 12/20/2011

MalaCards: Pineocytoma, also known as pineal gland neoplasm, is related to pineoblastoma and retinoblastoma. An important gene associated with Pineocytoma is ASMT (acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase), and among its related pathways are The phototransduction cascade and tryptophan utilization II. The compounds reticulin and smcc have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include pineal, brain and spinal cord, and related mouse phenotype nervous system.
