Summaries for Pineocytoma

About this section
NIH Rare Diseases:42 A pineocytoma is a tumor of the pineal gland, a small organ in the brain that makes melatonin (a sleep-regulating hormone). pineocytomas most often occur in adults as a solid mass, although they may appear to have fluid-filled (cystic) spaces on images of the brain. signs and symptoms of pineocytomas include headaches, nausea, hydrocephalus, vision abnormalities, and parinaud syndrome. pineocytomas are usually slow-growing and rarely spread to other parts of the body. treatment includes surgery to remove the pineocytoma; most of these tumors do not regrow (recur) after surgery. last updated: 11/13/2014

MalaCards based summary: Pineocytoma, also known as tumor of the pineal region, is related to pineoblastoma and retinoblastoma. An important gene associated with Pineocytoma is ASMT (acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase), and among its related pathways are The phototransduction cascade and tryptophan utilization II. The compounds reticulin and smcc have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include pineal, brain and spinal cord, and related mouse phenotype nervous system.

Wikipedia:64 Pineocytoma, also known as a pinealocytoma, is a benign, slowly growing tumor of the pineal gland.... more...
