Summaries for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

About this section
NINDS:49 Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a condition marked by severe, prolonged pain that people say feels like a burning sensation, a "pins and needles" sensation, or as if an arm or leg is being squeezed.  The continuous, intense pain  can get worse rather than better over time. CRPS most often affects one of the arms, legs, hands, or feet, and often the pain spreads to include thentire arm or leg.  Common symptoms include dramatic changes in the color and temperature of the skin over the affected limb or body part, accompanied by intense burning pain, skin sensitivity, abnormal sweating, and swelling.  Doctors aren’t sure what causes CRPS.  Some people have a confirmed nerve injury that is associated with the disorder, while others do not.  Another theory is that CRPS may be caused by something that triggers an immune system response.

MalaCards based summary: Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, also known as algodystrophy, is related to complex regional pain syndrome and algoneurodystrophy, and has symptoms including back pain, headache and neuralgia. An important gene associated with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy is CALCA (Calcitonin Related Polypeptide Alpha), and among its related pathways are Endothelin Pathways and Adipocytokine signaling pathway. The drug ethanol has been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include skin, bone and spinal cord.
