Summaries for Trichotillomania

About this section
NIH Rare Diseases:45 Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder characterized by an overwhelming urge to repeatedly pull out one's own hair (usually on the scalp), resulting in hair loss (alopecia). the eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard can also be affected. many affected individuals feel extreme tension when they feel an impulse, followed by relief, gratification or pleasure afterwards. the condition may be mild and manageable, or severe and debilitating. some individuals chew or swallow the hair they pull out (trichophagy), which can result in gastrointestinal problems. the exact cause of the condition is unknown. treatment typically involves psychotherapy (including cognitive behavior therapy) and/or drug therapy, but these are not always effective. last updated: 11/30/2012

MalaCards based summary: Trichotillomania, also known as hair-pulling syndrome, is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder and dementia, and has symptoms including autosomal dominant inheritance, obsessive-compulsive behavior and multifactorial inheritance. An important gene associated with Trichotillomania is SLITRK1 (SLIT And NTRK-Like Family, Member 1), and among its related pathways are Serotonin Receptor 2 and ELK-SRF/GATA4 signaling and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Pathway, Pharmacodynamics. Affiliated tissues include skin, brain and testes, and related mouse phenotype behavior/neurological.

Disease Ontology:10 An impulse control disorder that involves the uncontrollable plucking of ones hair.

OMIM:49 Trichotillomania (TTM) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by chronic, repetitive, or compulsive hair pulling... (613229) more...

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot:67 Trichotillomania: A neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by chronic, repetitive, or compulsive hair pulling resulting in noticeable hair loss. Affected individuals may develop physical complications and often have overlapping psychological disorders, such as Gilles de la Tourette syndrome or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
