MedlinePlus: Can you imagine feeling a shock in your face as you brush your teeth or shave? if you have trigeminal neuralgia (tn), you may know exactly what it's like. you may feel extreme numbness, tingling or burning on a part of your face. any vibration on your face, even from talking, can set it off. the condition may come and go, disappearing for days or even months. but the longer you have it, the less often it goes away.
your trigeminal nerve is responsible for sensations on your face. the cause of tn is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause tn, but in some cases the cause is unknown.
tn usually affects people over 50, especially women. medicines and sometimes surgery can help with the pain.

MalaCards: Trigeminal Neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux, is related to tympanosclerosis and vasomotor rhinitis. An important gene associated with Trigeminal Neuralgia is BMP2 (bone morphogenetic protein 2), and among its related pathways are GHRH Signaling and Sodium channels and transporters- inward current. The drugs carbamazepine and tocainide and the compounds tetrodotoxin citrate and qx 314 chloride have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include brain and skin, and related mouse phenotypes are cardiovascular system and nervous system. NIH Rare Diseases: Trigeminal neuralgia is a nerve disorder that causes a stabbing or electric-shock-like pain in parts of the face. The pain may result from a blood vessel pressing against the trigeminal nerve (the nerve that carries pain, feeling, and other sensations from the brain to the skin of the face), as a complication of multiple sclerosis, or due to compression of the nerve by a tumor. In some cases, the cause is unknown. Treatment options include medicines, surgery, and complementary approaches. 30 NINDS: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also called , is a chronic pain condition that causes extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like face pain.31 Wikipedia: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN, or TGN), also known as prosopalgia, the suicide disease, or Fothergill\'s...44 more... |
