Summaries for Ancylostomiasis

NIH Rare Diseases : 52 The following summary is from Orphanet , a European reference portal for information on rare diseases and orphan drugs. Orpha Number: 78 Definition A hookworm infection caused primarily by the species Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus , usually acquired through penetration of the skin, (often asymptomatic but that can also manifest with an allergic reaction at the site of skin penetration), followed by the migration of larva through the bloodstream to the lungs (causing asymptomatic pneumonitis, eosinophilia) and finally reaching and colonizing the small intestines where they cause blood extravasation leading to diarrhea, abdominal pain, and when untreated, melena, iron-deficiency anemia and protein malnutrition. Visit the Orphanet disease page for more resources.

MalaCards based summary : Ancylostomiasis, also known as hookworm infections, is related to filarial elephantiasis and parasitic helminthiasis infectious disease, and has symptoms including anemia, abdominal pain and intestinal bleeding. An important gene associated with Ancylostomiasis is EPGN (Epithelial Mitogen), and among its related pathways/superpathways are Post-translational modification- synthesis of GPI-anchored proteins and Folate biosynthesis. The drugs Albendazole and Pyrantel have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include skin, small intestine and eye, and related phenotype is homeostasis/metabolism.

Disease Ontology : 12 A parasitic helminthiasis infectious disease that involves infection of skin, eyes, and viscera in humans by the parasitic nematodes Ancylostoma braziliense, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, Ancylostoma duodenale or Ancylostoma caninum. The larvae cause lesions on the skin at the site of penetration. The infection has symptom intestinal bleeding, has symptom abdominal pain, has symptom anemia, has symptom severe diarrhea and has symptom malnutrition.

Wikipedia : 74 Ancylostomiasis is a hookworm disease caused by infection with Ancylostoma hookworms. The name is... more...
