Summaries for Appendicitis

MedlinePlus : 43 The appendix is a small, tube-like organ attached to the first part of the large intestine. It is located in the lower right part of the abdomen. It has no known function. A blockage inside of the appendix causes appendicitis. The blockage leads to increased pressure, problems with blood flow, and inflammation. If the blockage is not treated, the appendix can burst and spread infection into the abdomen. This causes a condition called peritonitis. The main symptom is pain in the abdomen, often on the right side. It is usually sudden and gets worse over time. Other symptoms may include Swelling in the abdomen Loss of appetite Nausea and vomiting Constipation or diarrhea Inability to pass gas Low fever Not everyone with appendicitis has all these symptoms. Appendicitis is a medical emergency. Treatment almost always involves removing the appendix. Anyone can get appendicitis, but it is more common among people 10 to 30 years old. NIH: National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

MalaCards based summary : Appendicitis, also known as acute appendicitis, is related to diverticulitis and inguinal hernia, and has symptoms including fever, vomiting and pain. An important gene associated with Appendicitis is CRP (C-Reactive Protein), and among its related pathways/superpathways are Innate Immune System and TGF-Beta Pathway. The drugs Dexmedetomidine and Morphine have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include appendix, colon and liver, and related phenotypes are cardiovascular system and homeostasis/metabolism

Disease Ontology : 12 A gastrointestinal system infectious disease that involves inflammation and infection of the appendix caused by the blockage of the lumen with a small, hard piece of stool, a foreign body or worms. Mucus backs up in the appendiceal lumen, causing bacteria that live inside the appendix to multiply. The infection has symptom pain, in the upper abdomen initially and later in the lower abdomen, has symptom nausea, has symptom vomiting and has symptom fever.

Wikipedia : 75 Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. Symptoms commonly include right lower abdominal pain,... more...
