Summaries for Brown-Sequard Syndrome

GARD : 20 Brown-Sequard syndrome is a rare neurological condition that results from an injury or damage to one side of the spinal cord. This condition results in weakness or paralysis on one side of the body (hemiparaplegia) and a loss of sensation on the opposite side (hemianesthesia). Brown-Sequard syndrome most commonly occurs in the the thoracic spine (upper and middle back). There are several causes of Brown-Sequard syndrome, including: a spinal cord tumor, trauma (such as a puncture wound to the neck or back), infectious or inflammatory diseases ( tuberculosis or multiple sclerosis ), and disk herniation. Treatment for this condition varies depending on the underlying cause.

MalaCards based summary : Brown-Sequard Syndrome, also known as hemispinal cord syndrome, is related to stroke, ischemic and spinal cord injury. An important gene associated with Brown-Sequard Syndrome is AQP4 (Aquaporin 4), and among its related pathways/superpathways is Spinal Cord Injury. Affiliated tissues include spinal cord, brain and lung.

NINDS : 53 Brown-Sequard syndrome (BSS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by a lesion in the spinal cord which results in weakness or paralysis (hemiparaplegia) on one side of the body and a loss of sensation (hemianesthesia) on the opposite side. BSS may be caused by a spinal cord tumor, trauma (such as a puncture wound to the neck or back), ischemia (obstruction of a blood vessel), or infectious or inflammatory diseases such as tuberculosis, or multiple sclerosis.
