Summaries for Cercarial Dermatitis

CDC: 2 Swimmer's itch, also called cercarial dermatitis, appears as a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to certain parasites that infect some birds and mammals. These microscopic parasites are released from infected snails into fresh and salt water (such as lakes, ponds, and oceans). While the parasite's preferred host is the specific bird or mammal, if the parasite comes into contact with a swimmer, it burrows into the skin causing an allergic reaction and rash. Swimmer's itch is found throughout the world and is more frequent during summer months. Most cases of swimmer's itch do not require medical attention.

MalaCards based summary: Cercarial Dermatitis, also known as swimmer's itch, is related to urinary schistosomiasis and intestinal schistosomiasis. An important gene associated with Cercarial Dermatitis is CTSZ (Cathepsin Z), and among its related pathways/superpathways are Inflammatory response pathway and Development and heterogeneity of the ILC family. Affiliated tissues include skin, breast and liver.

Disease Ontology: 11 A schistosomiasis that is a short-term, cutaneous inflammatory response associated with penetration of the skin by cercariae of bird schistosome, Austrobilharzia variglandis. The disease has symptom skin reddening, has symptom skin itching, in the water or immediately after emerging and has symptom itchy, raised papules, occur within hours of infection.

GARD: 19 An unusual presentation of schistosomiasis characterized by a pruritic papular rash in the perigenital or periumbilical area due to an allergic reaction to schistosoma eggs deposited in the skin.
