Summaries for Decubitus Ulcer

MedlinePlus : 43 Pressure sores are areas of damaged skin caused by staying in one position for too long. They commonly form where your bones are close to your skin, such as your ankles, back, elbows, heels and hips. You are at risk if you are bedridden, use a wheelchair, or are unable to change your position. Pressure sores can cause serious infections, some of which are life-threatening. They can be a problem for people in nursing homes. You can prevent the sores by Keeping skin clean and dry Changing position every two hours Using pillows and products that relieve pressure Pressure sores have a variety of treatments. Advanced sores are slow to heal, so early treatment is best.

MalaCards based summary : Decubitus Ulcer, also known as pressure ulcer, is related to marasmus and kwashiorkor, and has symptoms including pruritus and exanthema. An important gene associated with Decubitus Ulcer is TTR (Transthyretin), and among its related pathways/superpathways are Embryonic and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Differentiation Pathways and Lineage-specific Markers and Angiogenesis (WikiPathways). The drugs acetic acid and Rotigotine have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include skin, spinal cord and bone, and related phenotypes are homeostasis/metabolism and vision/eye

Disease Ontology : 12 Decubitus ulcer is a chronic ulcer of skin where the ulcer is an ulceration of tissue deprived of adequate blood supply by prolonged pressure.

PubMed Health : 63 About pressure ulcers: Some people inevitably spend a lot of time in a sitting or lying position. Most of them keep moving and shifting a little, consciously or subconsciously. But people who are extremely weak, paralyzed or unconscious may sit or lie motionless in the same position for a very long time. This puts them at greater risk of developing pressure ulcers (also called bedsores or pressure sores), which are open wounds caused by persistent external pressure against the skin. They can be very painful and usually take a long time to heal.

Wikipedia : 75 Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are localized damage to the skin and/or underlying tissue that... more...

Drugs & Therapeutics for Decubitus Ulcer

PubMed Health treatment related to Decubitus Ulcer: 63

As much pressure as possible should be taken off of the pressure ulcer. The most important thing is to stop sitting or lying on the wound. Special positioning aids, special soft mattresses, and regular repositioning and movement help to relieve the pressure. Sterile wound dressings are usually used to protect the wound and help it to heal. If necessary, the wound is also regularly cleaned and dead tissue removed. The most appropriate treatment will depend on the type and severity of the pressure ulcer.
