Summaries for Deficiency Anemia

MedlinePlus : 42 If you have anemia, your blood does not carry enough oxygen to the rest of your body. The most common cause of anemia is not having enough iron. Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives the red color to blood. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Anemia has three main causes: blood loss, lack of red blood cell production, and high rates of red blood cell destruction. Conditions that may lead to anemia include Heavy periods Pregnancy Ulcers Colon polyps or colon cancer Inherited disorders A diet that does not have enough iron, folic acid or vitamin B12 Blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, or cancer Aplastic anemia, a condition that can be inherited or acquired G6PD deficiency, a metabolic disorder Anemia can make you feel tired, cold, dizzy, and irritable. You may be short of breath or have a headache. Your doctor will diagnose anemia with a physical exam and blood tests. Treatment depends on the kind of anemia you have. MalaCards based summary : Deficiency Anemia, also known as anemia, is related to iron deficiency anemia and anemia, sideroblastic, 1, and has symptoms including angina pectoris, chest pain and edema. An important gene associated with Deficiency Anemia is HBA1 (Hemoglobin Subunit Alpha 1), and among its related pathways/superpathways are HIF-1 signaling pathway and HIF-1-alpha transcription factor network. The drugs Iron protein succinylate and Metformin have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include bone, bone marrow and kidney, and related phenotypes are cardiovascular system and hematopoietic system

Disease Ontology : 12 A hematopoietic system disease that is characterized by a decrease in the normal number of red blood cells.

PubMed Health : 62 About anemia: Anemia (uh-NEE-me-uh) is a condition in which your blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells. Anemia also can occur if your red blood cells don't contain enough hemoglobin (HEE-muh-glow-bin). Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color. This protein helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. If you have anemia, your body doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood. As a result, you may feel tired or weak. You also may have other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or headaches. Severe or long-lasting anemia can damage your heart, brain, and other organs in your body. Very severe anemia may even cause death.
