Summaries for Hashimoto Thyroiditis

MedlinePlus Genetics : 43 Hashimoto thyroiditis is a condition that affects the function of the thyroid, which is a butterfly-shaped gland in the lower neck. The thyroid makes hormones that help regulate a wide variety of critical body functions. For example, thyroid hormones influence growth and development, body temperature, heart rate, menstrual cycles, and weight. Hashimoto thyroiditis is a form of chronic inflammation that can damage the thyroid, reducing its ability to produce hormones. One of the first signs of Hashimoto thyroiditis is an enlargement of the thyroid called a goiter. Depending on its size, the enlarged thyroid can cause the neck to look swollen and may interfere with breathing and swallowing. As damage to the thyroid continues, the gland can shrink over a period of years and the goiter may eventually disappear.Other signs and symptoms resulting from an underactive thyroid can include excessive tiredness (fatigue), weight gain or difficulty losing weight, hair that is thin and dry, a slow heart rate, joint or muscle pain, and constipation. People with this condition may also have a pale, puffy face and feel cold even when others around them are warm. Affected women can have heavy or irregular menstrual periods and difficulty conceiving a child (impaired fertility). Difficulty concentrating and depression can also be signs of a shortage of thyroid hormones.Hashimoto thyroiditis usually appears in mid-adulthood, although it can occur earlier or later in life. Its signs and symptoms tend to develop gradually over months or years.

MalaCards based summary : Hashimoto Thyroiditis, also known as autoimmune thyroiditis, is related to subacute lymphocytic thyroiditis and myxedema. An important gene associated with Hashimoto Thyroiditis is CTLA4 (Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Associated Protein 4), and among its related pathways/superpathways are Autoimmune thyroid disease and Aldosterone synthesis and secretion. The drugs Prednisone and Hematinics have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include thyroid gland, thyroid and t cells, and related phenotypes are hashimoto thyroiditis and autoimmune antibody positivity

Disease Ontology : 12 An autoimmune disease of endocrine system that involves inflammation located in thyroid gland caused by the immune system reacting against its own tissues.

GARD : 20 Hashimoto's syndrome is an autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, reducing its ability to produce hormones (hypothyroidism). Many people with Hashimoto's syndrome have no symptoms at first. An early sign of the syndrome may be enlargement of the thyroid (called a goiter), which can potentially interfere with breathing or swallowing. Other signs and symptoms may include tiredness, weight gain, thin and dry hair, joint or muscle pain, constipation, cold intolerance, and/or a slowed heart rate. Women with Hashimoto's syndrome may have irregular menstrual periods or difficulty becoming pregnant. Hashimoto's syndrome is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It is more common in women than in men, and it usually appears in mid-adulthood. Like most autoimmune diseases, Hashimoto's syndrome is thought to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment is not always needed, but may include taking synthetic thyroid hormone.

KEGG : 36 Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is a common form of chronic autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), and is characterized by an inflammatory infiltrate of immunocytes that replace the parenchyma and induce thyroid enlargement, which eventually leads to gland fibrosis. Progressive thyrocyte depletion results in impaired thyroid hormone production and clinical hypothyroidism, a condition that involves a marked reduction of metabolic activity in various cells and tissues. AITDs are regarded as polygenic disorders resulting from the combination of a genetic predisposition in conjunction with an environmental trigger. Two main approaches have been employed to locate susceptibility loci for AITD, namely case control candidate gene studies and genome-wide linkage screens. Case control candidate gene studies have been employed to investigate numerous genes for association with AITD, but to date, only the human leucocyte region (HLA) on chromosome 6p21 and the cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated 4 (CTLA-4) gene on chromosome 2q33 have been consistently shown to be associated with disease.
