Summaries for Infective Endocarditis

GARD: 19 "Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the inner lining of the heart chambers (endocardium) and valves. This condition is sometimes called ""endocarditis,"" although it is important to distinguish it from non-Infective endocarditis. IE is caused by bacteria, fungi, or other germs invading the bloodstream and attaching to the heart. IE can damage the heart and cause serious and sometimes fatal complications. It can develop quickly or slowly depending on what type of germ is causing it and whether there is an underlying heart problem. Common symptoms of IE are fever and other flu-like symptoms, but signs and symptoms can vary. It can also cause problems in many other parts of the body besides the heart."

MalaCards based summary: Infective Endocarditis, also known as bacterial endocarditis, is related to endocarditis and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis, and has symptoms including osler's nodes An important gene associated with Infective Endocarditis is CNMD (Chondromodulin), and among its related pathways/superpathways are Response to elevated platelet cytosolic Ca2+ and Complement cascade. The drugs Imipenem and Fosfomycin have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include heart, kidney and skin, and related phenotypes are homeostasis/metabolism and cardiovascular system

Orphanet: 58 A rare bacterial infectious disease characterized by infection of a native or prosthetic heart valve, the endocardial surface, or an indwelling cardiac device. Main causative agents are Gram-positive bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species. Signs and symptoms include high fever or prolonged subfebrile state, excessive sweating, malaise, asthenia, arthralgia, myalgia, weight loss, headache, nausea, dyspnea, cough, heart murmurs, and petechiae of the skin. The most common complications are embolism in different organs and ischemic stroke, sepsis, heart failure, and renal failure.

Disease Ontology: 11 An endocarditis that is characterized by inflammation of the endocardium caused by infectious agents.
