Summaries for Lemierre's Syndrome

NIH Rare Diseases : 53 Lemierre syndrome is a rare and potentially life-threatening infection. The bacteria typically responsible is Fusobacterium necrophorum, although a variety of bacteria types may cause the condition. The bacterial infection begins in the throat and spreads through the lymphatic vessels. Symptoms include sore throat and fever, followed by swelling of the internal jugular vein (IJV). Subsequently, pus-containing tissue moves from the original location to various organs, most commonly the lungs. Other affected sites may include the joints, muscles, skin and soft tissue, liver, and/or spleen. Treatment involves the use of intravenous antibiotics.

MalaCards based summary : Lemierre's Syndrome, also known as lemierre syndrome, is related to thrombophlebitis and pulmonary embolism. An important gene associated with Lemierre's Syndrome is HOTAIR (HOX Transcript Antisense RNA
LncRNA-HOTAIR promotes TNF-? production in cardiomyocytes of LPS induced sepsis mice by activating NF-?B pathway.
Dysfunction Pattern: Regulation), and among its related pathways/superpathways are IL-1 Family Signaling Pathways and Folate Metabolism. The drugs Antibodies and Immunoglobulins have been mentioned in the context of this disorder. Affiliated tissues include tonsil, liver and lung, and related phenotypes are homeostasis/metabolism and respiratory system

Disease Ontology : 12 A commensal bacterial infectious disease that is characterized by systemic sepsis, ulcerative or necrotic lesions and multisystem abscesses caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. The disease often first presents as a severe tonsillitis or pharyngitis with high-grade fever and chills together with leukocytosis, cervical pain and neck swelling.
